What Is His Position?
“Just over half of all Americans — and a solid majority of women —
want to know John Roberts' position on abortion before the Senate votes
on whether to elevate him to the Supreme Court,” according to an
Associated Press story (July 21, 2005). Mr. Roberts, 50, an appeals
court judge, was selected by President Bush on Tuesday to replace
retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
The article went on to say that “Abortion is sure to come up at his
Senate confirmation hearings, and the survey found 52 percent believe he
should give his position on the matter before lawmakers vote on him,
while 42 percent said he should not.”
This writer would certainly be one of those who would like to know Mr.
Roberts’ position on the constitutionality of abortion. Abortion is the
scourge of our nation, the manifestation of a sick and selfish nature
that plagues our society. Since the U.S. Supreme court “legalized” the
depraved procedure on January 22, 1973, more than forty-five million
abortions have been performed in this country. An average of 150
abortions are performed every hour (source: the Guttmacher Institute). I
pray for the day when our nation’s highest court will overrule, strike
down, and stomp out the abominable 1973 decision.
Abortion is murder. Though the argument for the right to have an
abortion has been disguised as “a woman’s right to do with her body as
she chooses,“ the truth still remains that it is nothing short of the
taking of innocent life. If one is a believer in the Bible as the truth
of God’s word, this is the only conclusion he can reach.
The Bible speaks often about life in the womb. When
Rebekah conceived twins, the scriptures say that “the children
struggled together within her” (Genesis 25:22). The Hebrew word
translated “children” (within the womb) is the same word used to
describe those “children” already born (same chapter, verse 4).
When the Angel of the Lord told Samson’s mother that she would conceive,
he told her, “Please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink...
For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son... for the child shall be
a Nazirite to God from the womb...” (Judges 13:4,5). Notice that
what the mother drank affected the child, even in the womb.
When a pregnant Elizabeth received a visit from Mary the mother of
Jesus, “the babe leaped in her womb” (Luke 1:41). Again, the
Greek word for “babe” in the womb is the same word used for a “babe”
already born. In fact, it is used by an angel of God in reference to
Jesus on the night of His birth (Luke 2:12,16).
These passages and others show unequivocally that God views that which
is conceived in the womb to be a “child” and a “babe” -- a
LIFE!
Yes, we would indeed like to know where Mr. Roberts stands on these
issues of life and murder. -- and may we be reminded that among the
things that “are an abomination to” the LORD are “hands that
shed innocent blood” (Proverbs 6:17).
