The
No-Spin Zone
“You’re entering the ‘No-Spin Zone.’” So says Bill O’Reilly each
weeknight on the Fox News Channel’s “O’Reilly Factor,” a show that
purports to objectively appraise the leading political issues of the
day. To ‘spin’ a particular matter means to assess it with one’s own
bias, but O’Reilly claims that his views lean neither to the right nor
the left politically, but are, rather, correct evaluations of what
should be quite apparent to the observer. We will leave it to his
audience to decide if his show is really “The No-Spin Zone.”
Of course, there truly is a “No-Spin Zone,” politically speaking. Take
any issue of the day and there are truths and facts about the matter,
those involved, and their motives. We may never hear about these facts,
either because they never surface or are covered over by all the
‘spinning’ from the news media, but they are there nonetheless.
I fear there are many who perceive the religion of Christ to be one
giant ‘Spin Zone.’ They see more than a thousand different denominations
today publishing their ideas about God and can’t see it otherwise.
Worse yet, most of these scoff at the concept of a religious “No-Spin
Zone.” Approach them about a perceived inconsistency between their lives
and what the Bible teaches and they’ll say, “Well, that’s just your
interpretation.” To them, it’s as though everyone has their own
religious bias and, therefore, puts their own ‘spin’ on biblical
teaching. To them, there is no such thing as absolute truth.
Friend, does this describe you?
Do not be deceived -- there IS a religious ‘No-Spin Zone” and it is
called God’s “word.” Jesus said that God’s word “is truth”
(John 17:17). This word -- the Bible -- comes from the mind of God, is
without error, and is absolute (1 Corinthians 2:10-13; Psalm 119:89).
You may think that every religious group is trying to put their ‘spin’
on what the Bible teaches, but the truth remains that the truth remains!
(Chew on that for a minute!) Denominational bias notwithstanding, God’s
word still shines forth brightly, ready to reveal the mind of God to
those who will seek it. It is unchanging and will never pass away (Mark
13:31; 1 Peter 1:23-25).
Do you suppose, then, that we ought to be ready to discuss with others
our convictions? If we have the truth, we should desire to share it with
others who don’t. If they have the truth, we should be eager to hear it.
Dear reader, there IS such a thing as TRUTH! If not, why then would
Jesus say, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make
you free”? (John 8:32).
We can be assured that one day we will stand before the Judge of heaven
and earth, and on that day there will be no ‘spinning’ going on. The
standard will be the word of Jesus. The standard will NOT be what you or
any group have ’thought’ about it, but simply what the word of Jesus IS
(John 12:48).
Are you entering “The No-Spin Zone”?
Let’s get our heads in the Book.
