Jesus Has Not Changed!
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Such is
one of the concluding thoughts in the letter to the “Hebrews” (13:8).
The writer began his treatise much the same way, saying that “God,
who at various times and in different ways spoke in time past to the
fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His
Son...” (1:1-2). Now he finishes by saying, “Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday, today, and forever.”
Jesus does not change, and His word does not change. That appears to be
the import of these concluding remarks. In the preceding verse (13:7)
the writer counseled his readers to “remember those who rule over
you, who have spoken the word of God to you.” They had spoken the
word of God in times past and “Jesus Christ is the same.” He then
charges them (vs. 9) to “not be carried about with various and
strange doctrines...” Thus we see him indicating that Jesus’ word
does not change, just as He Himself does not.
Friend, how many problems among friends, relatives, and brethren -- as
well as in our own minds -- would dissolve if we would simply
acknowledge that the gospel God spoke 2,000 years ago through His Son
remains the same? God spoke (past tense) through Jesus! Jesus is the
same! Don’t be carried off with strange doctrines!
Division has run amuck among those who claim to be believers in Jesus.
And who are the culprits? The “strange doctrines” of men’s devising, the
doctrines which repudiate any notion that Jesus’ word is unchanging --
they are the culprits! How can men hope to find blessed unity when they
refuse to join hands over Jesus’ word and His word only?! It can’t be
done, not when men are going a thousand different ways with a word they
believe to be changeable.
If we are to find peace with ourselves, fellow-believers, and (most
importantly) God, we must “contend earnestly for the faith which was
once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). It has been “once
for all delivered,“ beloved. Such implies that there have not been
(nor ever will be) any amendments, revisions, or addendums to it.
If you don’t see your spiritual thoughts and actions corresponding to
the New Testament of Jesus Christ, it’s not Jesus who has changed, nor
His word. Guess who needs to change
