What Is Our Portion?

In the 17th Psalm, David pleaded with the Lord to deliver him with His hand “from men whose portion in life is of the world” (vs. 14, New American Standard Version, marg.). It is evident from the psalm in particular, and David’s life in general, that David’s “portion” was the LORD God. He put his hopes and aspirations in God in every realm of life, yet in comparison had to deal with “men of the world” whose only concerns were the things of this life. While the LORD had filled these men’s “belly” with His “hidden treasure,“ they did not acknowledge Him nor look for anything beyond this world. What a striking contrast David’s outlook was to theirs: “As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness” (vs. 15).

Think with me... What is OUR portion?

Do we “lay up for” ourselves “treasures in heaven” or “treasures on earth”? (Matthew 6:19-20)

Do we “look at the things which are not seen” or “the things which are seen”? (2 Corinthians 4:18)

Do we look at the “things which are...eternal” or the “things which are...temporary”? (2 Cor. 4:18)

Do we “look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith,” or do we look unto the comforts of this life? (Hebrews 12:2)

Is Christ “our life,” or is the here-and-now? (Colossians 3:4)

Do we seek “those things which are above,” or those which are below? (Colossians 3:1)

Is “our citizenship...in heaven,” or is it in this world? (Philippians 3:20)

Are we “spiritually minded” or “carnally minded”? (Romans 8:6).

Is our God Jehovah Almighty, or is it our “belly”? (Philippians 3:19)

Does our life “consist” of journeying toward heaven, or does it “consist in the abundance of the things” we possess? (Luke 12:15)

Really, now... Is God OUR portion?
