Did
You Thank God?
Did you thank the LORD for the rain this past week, or did you take His
blessing for granted? We have had drought conditions in the Central
Kentucky area this year, and the precipitation from above should make us
look heavenward, from where “every good gift and every perfect gift”
comes (James 1:17).
Several decades ago, in the mid-1930’s, this nation had a tremendous
drought that led to the “dust bowl.” Over eighty per cent of the country
was affected by a lack of rain. The ground was so dry that historians
cite many health problems (acute respiratory infections, dust pneumonia)
attributable to such. In fact, the Red Cross opened six emergency
hospitals in Colorado, Texas, and Kansas just to deal with these
ailments, and during this time issued more than 17,000 dust masks for
dust-related illnesses. Things were so bad that there were even “deaths
from suffocation in dust storms” (National Drought Mitigation Center
statistics). All this added to what was becoming the “Great Depression.”
It was a humbling time, a time when many were made to turn to God.
Doubtless, water from above was not taken for granted.
So I say, did you thank God for the rain (as well as the sunshine)? The
LORD truly is our Sustainer, the One in Whom “we live and move and
have our being” (Acts 17:28).
