An Alarming Week

Two distressing matters occurred in the international community this past week. Spain’s parliament legalized homosexual marriages, and Canada’s legislature move to within one step from doing the same. We quote from an AP article:

“MADRID, Spain - Parliament legalized gay marriage Thursday, defying conservatives and clergy who opposed making traditionally Roman Catholic Spain the third country to allow same-sex unions nationwide. Jubilant gay activists blew kisses to lawmakers after the vote.

“The measure passed the 350-seat Congress of Deputies by a vote of 187 to 147. The bill, part of the ruling Socialists’ aggressive agenda for social reform, also lets gay couples adopt children and inherit each others’ property...

“The Netherlands and Belgium are the only other two countries that allow gay marriage nationwide. Canada’s House of Commons passed legislation Tuesday that would legalize gay marriage; its Senate is expected to pass the bill into law by the end of July.

“Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero noted this in debate before the vote. ‘We were not the first, but I am sure we will not be the last. After us will come many other countries, driven, ladies and gentlemen, by two unstoppable forces: freedom and equality,’ he told the chamber...

“Beatriz Gimeno, a longtime leader of the gay rights movement in Spain, held back tears as she hugged her partner Boti after the vote. ‘It is a historic day for the world’s homosexuals. We have been fighting for many years,’ Gimeno said. ‘Now comes the hardest part, which is changing society’s mentality.’

We wonder just how long it will be before the Congress of our United States passes similar legislation. We are a nation in a global community, and the world is changing, slowing drifting toward Sodom. We have seen a few signs of spiritual awakening in our own nation lately, but such international happenings cause this writer alarm.

In the beginning God created the male, and then said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” He then took one of the man’s ribs and made it into a woman, “and He brought her to the man” (Genesis 2:18, 22-22). Our Lord Jesus, in quoting this passage said, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female...?” (Matthew 19:4). God ordained marriage for man and woman, not man and man or woman and woman.

Homosexuality is a sin, no matter how many the attempts by man to legislate to the contrary. Jesus’ word says that neither “homosexuals, nor sodomites... will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9,10). But even further, the teaching of Christ calls homosexuality a “vile passion” and “shameful,” the committing of such evidence of a “debased mind” (Romans 1:26-28). It is a perversion of God’s creation and order. “Society’s mentality” may change about the matter, but God’s word won’t, being “forever settled in heaven” (Psa. 119:89).

Let disciples everywhere be exhorted to continue to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world” -- and let those of us in this country pray that our nation’s leaders will take a stand against this perversion.
